It is intended that the study and preparation of the health centre as a design thesis shall have the following objects: (a) To make a study of the existing clinics and to propose possible improvements; (b) To provide a solution for a centre accommodating medical and health facilities to serve a neighbourhood; (c) To emphasize the need for not only diagnosis and treatment facilities but also public health education and research; (d) To stimulate interest in the need (in this industrialization era) for the prevention of occupational health hazards as well as the preservation and promotion of the general health of the workers in the industries

The survey is carried out only on a general basis of existing housing developments. This is not a detail study into housing itself, as it is well aware that it is not possible for any single person, with a limited time to supply the answers to the many problems of housing. The survey is mainly confined to developments either for sale or on rental basis within the middle income group and above.

The object of the thesis is: 1. To produce a neighbourhood having a coherent structure, easy to understand; 2. To produce a scheme compact in planning, to give a feeling of urban-living without any sacrificing standards of open space and car parking; 3. To achieve an urban character for the neighbourhood in terms of buildings, landscape and the relationship between them; 4. To give to the neighbourhood a physical identity of its own; 5. To design a neighbourhood having complete segregation of vehicular and pedestrian traffic; 6. To show the advantage of a different environment created by complete segregation of vehicular and pedestrian traffic; 7. To investigate into the problems and feasibility of mixed housing types of development; 8. To provide a wide variety of types of dwelling units within a well-balanced community integrated with communal facilities and amenities for recreation, shopping, gathering, physical needs and education; 9. To show and emphasis the need for a comprehensive study and survey of housing problem in our Republic of Singapore

Briefly, the objects of the Thesis are: a. To provide for the need of an urban population seeking a resort; b. To explore by this example the possibility of our coastal islands earmarked for development into play areas; c. To compensate for the acute shortage of playing fields and recreational areas in our over built city proper. Our Master Plan recommendation of 4.5 acres/1,000 population of open space made up of 1 acre of school playing field, 2 "" public recreation ground, 1.5 “" public parks is minimum standard; d. To provide a Tourist attraction to carter for this expanding trade being stimulated by the Tourist Promotion Board; e. To study into a new architectural building type which is demanding the architects attention and skill; f. To study into a unique architectural problem with 3 entity and weave them into a whole, namely Town Planning, Architecture and Landscaping
