Abstract |
Singapore, located within the biodiverse tropical Southeast Asia, hosts a high diversity of living species, including those thriving in marine habitats such as corals reefs, seagrass meadows, as well as rocky and sandy shores. While its dramatic transformation in the last 200 years has resulted in the loss of natural habitats and their associated marine species, coastal flora and fauna appear to be persisting. Research on the spatial variation of local marine biodiversity remains limited in geographic and taxonomic coverage. In this study, we consolidated existing data on species richness of 27 intertidal sites in Singapore obtained by researchers and citizen scientists since the year 2000, and performed diversity and community analyses to characterise spatial patterns in species richness and composition around its shores. Our dataset contains a total of 994 intertidal marine species comprising macroflora, macrofauna, and macroalgae, and analyses show that sites along the Johor Straits in the north and Singapore Strait in the south are not significantly different in richness. When aggregated across sites, however, there are more species in the south than in the north likely due to the wider range of habitat types along the Singapore Strait. Community composition is also significantly different between northern and southern sites as a result of these distinct habitats. Interestingly, hardening of the shoreline, especially along the southeastern coast, have created novel habitats for coral and coral-associated communities to develop. Better understanding of these diversity drivers will help scientists and resource managers prioritise intertidal areas and devise strategies for coastal conservation |

Abstract |
Vegetation in the Mandai Lake Road area of Singapore may give way to development despite the close proximity to the Central Catchment Nature Reserve. However, little is known about the biodiversity there, particularly the entomofauna. The order Orthoptera, family Reduviidae (from the order Hemiptera), and monophyletic lineage Aculeata (from the order Hymenoptera) were surveyed in 2014. For the Orthoptera, 84 species from 10 families were recorded (including 73 species from nine families from the 2014 sampling). Fourteen species were recorded in the adjacent nature reserves for the first time. Three new species were discovered and subsequently described. Three more are potentially new to science. For the Reduviidae, 23 species from seven subfamilies were recorded from sampling in 2013, 2014, and museum records, representing one fifth of the total number of species in Singapore (95). For the Aculeate Hymenoptera, at least 67 species were recorded. |

Abstract |
The orthopteran community in a vacant site along Neo Tiew Lane 2 (NTL2), Singapore, was examined for 28 months. The objectives were to understand the abundance, species richness, diversity, evenness, and species composition of Orthoptera in NTL2. A total of 54 species of Orthoptera were recorded, with the suborder Ensifera having a greater richness, abundance, and diversity than Caelifera. Forty-five plant species were identified during the surveys, of which almost half of the species are classified as naturalised, and only a small proportion is native (16%). A clearance of vegetation also occurred during the monitoring, hence the impact and response of orthopterans to habitat change were investigated. Orthopteran diversity was found to be affected by the clearance but also recovered with vegetation succession to a lower diversity than pre-clearance. The diversity for Caelifera and Ensifera follows a similar trend but the impact of clearance on Caelifera is more significant |
