Abstract |
The Janss’ pipefish was first recorded in Singapore based on examples photographed off Pulau Hantu (Low et al., 2009). This species grows to 13 cm in total length, and inhabits reef crevices, either individually or in pairs. It is distributed from the Andaman Sea through Indonesia and tropical Australia to the Philippines, Palau and the Solomon Islands (Allen & Erdmann, 2012: 192). |

Abstract |
The specimen was collected by the contributor who then deposited it in the Raffles Museum of Biodiversity Research at the National University of Singapore under the catalogue number ZRC 2.7020 (see Fig. 2 and 3) In Singapore, the jasper cat snake occurs in mature forest in the Central Catchment Nature Reserve and on Pulau Tekong (Baker & Lim, 2012: 95). As it is rarely seen, it is regarded as a ‘critically endangered’ species within Singapore (Lim et al., 2008: 162). |

Abstract |
This is one of five species of the flatfish genus Pseudorhombus recorded from Singapore waters. The others are Pseudorhombus arsius, P. malayanus and P. neglectus (Fowler, 1938: 80-81), with P. elevatus recently recorded from the eastern Johor Strait (Ng et al., 2015: 320). The Javan flounder is distinguished from its congeners in the area in being comparatively more slender, and without a notch in front of the eyes along the rounded upper profile of the head (Amaoka & Hensley, 2001: 3852). |
